Can Personal Trainers Hurt You?

Okay, so the title of this post can be extremely misleading if you're just skimming, so please read carefully and do not jump to conclusions. As with every other profession out there, good and bad service providers exist. From mechanics to doctors... and yes personal trainers. And as consumers, we all have the responsibility to take charge of our health rather than just blindly following the advice of "trusted professionals". Okay, so with that caveat/disclaimer out of the way, here's what this post is about.

I've been saying for years that people need to be careful when selecting Personal Trainers. In fact, I go further than that. I always instruct my clients to always study as much as they can on their own, so that they become more knowledgeable. This added knowledge will help them make better decisions with regards to picking a personal trainer that is right for them.

I've been the victim of bad personal trainers in the past (when I didn't know better) and I ran across this video on YouTube that helps shed light on how common this problem is.

Take a look:

That said, there are really good personal trainers out there that can really (and I mean really) help make a difference in your life. Most of the time the best knowledge only comes from direct experience, and whenever you get a "coach" of any kind, you are literally learning from their experience. Whether it's learning how to maintain proper form during certain exercises so you don't get injured, or just learning how to use a piece of equipment properly, someone who's in the fitness game for a living can really help you shorten the learning curve and keep you safe.

So do not shy away from getting a personal trainer to help you accomplish your fitness goals. Just be careful who you pick and the criteria you're using.
